What is a word frequency counter?

A word frequency counter analyses a block of text and tallies how many times each unique word appears. The results are displayed as a ranked table showing each word, its count, and its percentage of the total word count.

What are stop words?

Stop words are extremely common English words — like "the", "a", "and", "is", "in" — that carry little meaningful content. Enabling the "Ignore common words" toggle filters these out so you can focus on the words that actually define the subject of your text.

Is the analysis case-sensitive?

By default, case sensitivity is off, meaning "Apple" and "apple" are counted as the same word. Turn on the case-sensitive toggle if you need to distinguish between capitalised and lowercase versions.

What does the minimum word length filter do?

Setting a minimum word length excludes very short words (like "I", "a") from the results. For example, setting it to 4 means only words with 4 or more characters will appear in the frequency table.

How do I copy the results?

Click the "Copy table" button above the frequency table. The data is copied as tab-separated values (TSV) — you can paste it directly into Excel, Google Sheets, or any spreadsheet app.

Can I sort the results differently?

Yes. Use the sort controls to switch between Frequency (highest count first), Alphabetical (A–Z), or Length (longest words first).

Is my text stored anywhere?

No. All analysis happens entirely in your browser. Your text is never sent to any server.

What is word frequency analysis useful for?

Writers use it to spot overused words and vary their vocabulary. SEO professionals check keyword density. Researchers analyse topic prominence. Teachers use it for vocabulary exercises. It is also handy for quickly understanding the main themes in a document.
