About Tip Calculator

About This Tip Calculator

This free tip calculator instantly works out the tip amount, total bill, and per-person cost for any group size. Enter the bill, select a tip percentage, and see the split — no mental maths required.

The Tip Formulas

Tip Amount = Bill × (Tip % ÷ 100)

Total Bill = Bill + Tip Amount

Per Person = Total Bill ÷ Number of People

Worked Example

Four friends share a €120 restaurant bill and want to leave an 18% tip:

  • Tip Amount = €120 × 0.18 = €21.60
  • Total Bill = €120 + €21.60 = €141.60
  • Per Person = €141.60 ÷ 4 = €35.40

Tipping Around the World

  • United States: 18–22% is standard; below 15% is considered low
  • United Kingdom: 10–15% at sit-down restaurants; often included in the bill
  • Europe: 10% is appreciated; rounding up is common in many countries
  • Australia / New Zealand: Tipping is optional; 10% is a generous gesture
  • Japan: Tipping is not customary and can sometimes be considered rude

When to Use the Round-Up Option

Rounding each person's share up to the nearest whole number makes cash splitting far simpler. It also slightly increases the total tip, which is a nice gesture for your server. For example, €13.40 rounds up to €14.00 per person — easy to pay and easy to collect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our tools. Can't find what you're looking for? Contact us.

How do I calculate a tip?

Multiply the bill amount by the tip percentage divided by 100. For example, a 20% tip on a €50 bill is €50 × 0.20 = €10. Add that to the bill for a €60 total.

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

Tipping customs vary by country. In the US, 15–20% is standard; 18–20% is good service. In the UK and Europe, 10–15% is typical. A general guide: 10% = acceptable, 15–18% = good, 20% = great, 25%+ = excellent.

How do I split a bill equally?

Add the tip to the total bill, then divide by the number of people. This tool does that automatically — enter the bill, tip %, and number of people to see the per-person amount instantly.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Tipping on the pre-tax (subtotal) amount is technically correct, but tipping on the post-tax total is also widely accepted and simpler. For most people the difference is small — use whichever method feels natural.

What does the "round up" option do?

Rounding up bumps each person's share up to the nearest whole number (e.g. €13.40 → €14.00). It makes cash splitting easier and often leaves a slightly higher tip for the server.

How do I calculate tip for a large group?

Enter the full bill amount, choose your tip percentage, and set the number of people. The calculator shows the total tip, total bill, and the exact amount each person owes — including tip.
