About Discount Calculator

About This Discount Calculator

This tool instantly calculates the discounted price, amount saved, and final price from an original price and discount percentage. Useful for shoppers checking sale prices, retailers setting promotional pricing, and anyone who needs quick percentage-off maths.

The Discount Formulas

Amount Saved = Original Price × (Discount % ÷ 100)

Final Price = Original Price − Amount Saved

Discount % = ((Original − Sale Price) ÷ Original) × 100

Worked Example

A jacket priced at €120 is on sale with 30% off:

  • Amount Saved = €120 × 0.30 = €36
  • Final Price = €120 − €36 = €84

Common Discount Tiers

  • 10% off — Typical loyalty or newsletter discount
  • 20–25% off — Standard seasonal sale
  • 30–50% off — Black Friday / clearance pricing
  • 60–70% off — End-of-line or heavy markdown

Stacking Discounts

Two discounts applied sequentially are not simply summed. A 20% discount followed by an additional 10% off gives 28% total off — not 30%. This is because the second discount applies to the already-reduced price.

How do I calculate a discount?

To calculate a discount, multiply the original price by the discount percentage divided by 100. For example, a 20% discount on €50 is €50 × 0.20 = €10 saved. The final price is €50 − €10 = €40.

What is the formula for discounted price?

Discounted Price = Original Price × (1 − Discount % ÷ 100). Amount Saved = Original Price − Discounted Price. For example: €120 with a 25% discount → €120 × 0.75 = €90 final price, saving €30.

How do I calculate the percentage off from two prices?

Discount % = ((Original Price − Sale Price) ÷ Original Price) × 100. For example, if an item was €80 and is now €60: ((80 − 60) ÷ 80) × 100 = 25% off.

How do I stack multiple discounts?

Stacked discounts are not simply added together. A 20% discount followed by a 10% discount gives: Price × 0.80 × 0.90 = Price × 0.72 — which is 28% off, not 30%. Apply each discount sequentially to the running price.

What is the difference between discount and markdown?

A discount is a temporary reduction off a listed price (a sale or promotional offer). A markdown is a permanent reduction to the retail price, often used when clearing old stock. Both are calculated the same way mathematically.

How do I calculate VAT or tax on top of a discounted price?

Apply the discount first, then add tax to the discounted price. For example: €100 item, 20% discount → €80 discounted price. With 20% VAT: €80 × 1.20 = €96 final price including tax.
